Kicking off their title defense in style, the Red Lions make sure there are no surprises against the Chiefs

MANILA, Philippines – The San Beda Red Lions opened up their four-peat title bid in the NCAA Season 95 with a 59-46 clamp-down on host school Arellano Chiefs at the Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday, July 7.

Former Finals MVP Donald Tankoua anchored the low-scoring win with 13 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.

James Canlas added 10 markers and 7 boards while backcourt partner Evan Nelle chipped in 9 points, 5 boards and 5 assists for the Red Lions.

Both teams went back-and-forth until midway through the 3rd quarter, where Justin Arana gave the Chiefs a 35-34 lead. However, that was the last time Arellano would sniff the lead as Canlas led a 9-0 San Beda run to take the 43-35 advantage heading to the 4th.

From there, the defending champions kept the Chiefs at bay down the stretch as they extended the lead as high as 14, 59-45, off a late Nelle mid-range jumper.

The returning Kent Salado was the lone bright spot for Arellano as he led with 18 points and 11 rebounds in the losing effort.

Gelo Sablan added 7 markers and 8 boards as no other Chief breached double-digits in scoring.
