UST tops Adamson, claims first win in UAAP Season 78
MANILA, Philippines – University of Santo Tomas opened its season against Adamson University with a victory, 70-64, to start its UAAP Season 78 campaign on Saturday, September 5 at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
Senior ace shooter Eduardo Daquioag converted 22 of his career-high 28 markers in the second half to help the Growling Tigers claim their first win in the double-round robin eliminations.
Meanwhile, fellow veteran Kevin Ferrer contributed 24 points to UST’s victory over Adamson.
In addition, Ferrer’s hot hands nailed 12 of his 24 baskets in the first period to permit the gold-and-white troop to take an early 22-5 edge.
Although the two aforementioned players were able to pull off stellar performances for UST, Cameroonian reinforcement Karim Abdul had a silent output as he only chipped in 7 points, 7 rebounds and one assist.
The España boulevard-based brigade fended off a gritty 12-4 surge by Adamson that capped off with Dawn Hynric Ochea’s and-one play and Joseph Airo Nalos’ freebies from the foul line to put the blue shirts within striking distance inside the contest’s last minute.
However, Louie Vigil came off the bench to make 3 of his 4 charities that secured the thrilling triumph for UST, who joins University of the Philippines for the early lead in the team standings.
Despite dropping its first outing against UST, Adamson was led by Nalos, who registered 18 points, two rebounds, 3 assists and one steal.
