La Salle blows out Adamson to end two-game losing skid
La Salle improves to 2-2 thanks to a balanced scoring effort against the winless Adamson Falcons

MANILA, Philippines – The De La Salle University Green Archers snapped their two-game losing streak with a one-sided victory over the Adamson Soaring Falcons, 88-71, on Sunday, September 20, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

La Salle, who improves to 2-2 in the UAAP Season 78 senior’s basketball tournament, took control of the game from start to finish thanks to the well-balanced scoring production from their entire roster.

The winning side was led by Jeron Teng, who put up 18 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists. Thomas Torres broke out of his early-season struggles by registering 16 points and 5 assists, while second-year Archer Julian Sargent finished with 11 points.

Playing quicker and more unselfish on offense, La Salle raced off to a 24-10 lead after one quarter and extended that edge to 47-26 at the half following an Andrei Caracut buzzer-beating layup.

The Green Archers led by as much as 26, 56-30, before Adamson trimmed the lead down to 11 at one point in the final quarter.

However, the Soaring Falcons’ aspirations of a comeback came to an end when Teng hit consecutive baskets and Torres hit a 3-ball from the corner to put La Salle ahead 72-54 with 6:46 to go, essentially sealing the win.

“Thomas played great on both ends of the floor,” DLSU head coach Juno Sauler said after the game, which La Salle had 7 days to prepare for. “Not only with his scoring but also we had to put him on Nalos, who’s their main scorer, so aside from Thomas contributing offensively, he helped the team a lot also defensively.”

“I just wanted to play. I just wanted to help the team in any way I can,” Torres said about his slump-breaking performance.

“We had a week to prepare for this game, and every day coming into this game, our practices were great. The intensity, the energy was there, so I think we just brought it here,” he later added.

Adamson, who falls to 0-4 with the loss, was led by the 18 points and 16 boards of Pape Sarr. Joseph Nalos and Harold Ng put up 10 points each, while Dawn Ochea scored 9 points.

Falcons head coach Mike Fermin was ejected from the game in the fourth period after receiving two technical fouls for continuous complaining on an unsportsmanlike foul called on Ochea.

DLSU shot 47% from the floor and 37% from downtown while having more assists than their opponents, 21-10. The Green Archers, however, struggled with keeping the ball as they turned it over 22 times.

La Salle also vastly out-shot Adamson from the perimeter, 39-19.

The Green Archers will have another week to prepare for their next game against the 2-2 UE Red Warriors on Sunday, September 27.

“They like to gamble, so I think we have to be prepared with our gameplan on how we’re going to beat the press,” Torres said about the next match.

Adamson, on the other hand, will face NU next on Wednesday, September 23.
