DLSU Lady Spikers turn back UP Lady Maroons for second win
Riding the momentum from their first win of the season 3 days ago, the De La Salle Lady Spikers overcame the UP Lady Maroons in 4 sets

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) — Riding on momentum from their first win of the season 3 days ago, the De La Salle Lady Spikers overcame the UP Lady Maroons in 4 sets, 25-14, 25-13, 19-25, 25-20, in the UAAP Season 78 women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday, February 6 at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig.

Mary Joy Baron, a third-year middle hitter, paced La Salle with a career-high 17 points built on 12 spikes and 4 blocks. Ernestine Tiamzon amassed 13 including 4 service aces.

Ara Galag also had 13 markers while Carol Cerveza and Mika Reyes had 12 and 10 points, respectively.

“You can’t take UP lightly, you need to respect them,” La Salle head coach Ramil De Jesus said in Filipino of his team needing 4 sets to dispatch UP. “Although most of them are rookies, you can still see their level of play inside the court is no joke.”

Rookie Isa Molde topscored with 15 points for UP, as another rookie Justine Dorog registered 10 markers, all coming off kills.

Diana Carlos had 7 points while Kathy Bersola finihed with 6.

The Taft-based Spikers dominated through the first two sets before the Lady Maroons picked up steam and confidence in the third set, pulling away 19-14 to extend the match.

“I saw my players relaxed a bit after the first two sets,” De Jesus explained. “They weren’t able to sustain their play, the offense, the defense.”

La Salle, however, recovered at the start the fourth sparked by 3 straight service aces that caused UP’s defense to go into disarray.

The Lady Spikers, who are looking to improve off two straight seasons as runners-up, cruised the rest of the way.
