UP Lady Maroons outlast Adamson Lady Falcons in 4 sets
The UP Lady Maroons move to 2-2 with a win over Adamson

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – The UP Lady Maroons continued their respectable start to the UAAP Season 78 Women’s Volleyball Tournament with a 4-set, 26-24, 25-27, 25-21, 25-19, victory over the Adamson Lady Falcons on Wednesday, February 17, at the San Juan Arena.

The win improved the record of UP to 2-2, while Adamson dropped to 1-3 as the volleyball season hits the halfway mark of the first round.

“Kung gusto natin Mag top 4, syempre we have to win as [many] games as possible,” said UP head coach Jerry Yee post game.

(If we want to make the top 4, we need to win as many games as possible.)

Maria Molde had a superb outing for UP, registering 23 points while converting big kills late in sets.

Kathy Bersola and Nicole Tiamzon also both played well by posting in double-figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Adamson was led by the 23 points of Mylene Paat and 25 of veteran Jessica Galanza. No other player scored more than 9 points.

“For this game, of course, if you win, satisfied ka,” Yee also said about his team’s performance.

Both teams were fairly even in the scoring categories, but it were the 11 points UP received from Adamson errors that made the difference in a game where the Lady Maroons outscored the Lady Falcons overall, 101-90.

The sets were as close as the final scores indicate. The first one needed extra rallies after a 24-all tie, but a net error by Adamson and service ace by UP let the latter attain first blood.

The Maroons looked on the verge of a second straight set win when they went up 21-16, but a run from Adamson cut the lead to 23-22.

The second set also tied at 24, and the Falcons eventually knotted the contest at 1-1 thanks to a block point and Paat kill.

The third set was also close with UP leading late, 23-20. An Adamson error made it a 4-point set not long after, and Molde eventually sealed it with a kill, 25-21.

Both teams went back and forth in the fourth set before the Maroons eventually pulled away late thanks to their opponents’ errors.

Adamson has another tough challenge ahead when it takes on defending champion Ateneo on Saturday, February 20. The following day, UP will face FEU. Both games take place at the MOA Arena. – Rappler.com
