Singh delivers in clutch as NU Lady Bulldogs sweep UP Lady Maroons
The NU Lady Bulldogs regain some of their old gritty bite with a straight-sets victory over the UP Lady Maroons

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) — Jorelle Singh came up with 10 points and Myla Pablo led with 14 as the NU Lady Bulldogs regained some of their gritty bite with a straight-sets victory over the UP Lady Maroons, 25-19, 25-23, 27-25, in the UAAP Season 78 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday, March 30 at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Singh, a second year hitter, was clutch late in the third set as she helped NU ward off a UP side fighting to extend the match.

After climbing out of an early 4-point deficit, Singh bailed her team out of a dangerous situation with back-to-back points to tie the count at 23. She later scored one of her total 6 service aces to give the Lady Bulldogs a precarious 25-24 edge.

Isa Molde kept the Lady Maroons alive in the ensuing play but two straight errors at the net and on the attack notched the final tally.

“Our services were good,” said head coach Roger Gorayeb in Filipino as he praised his team’s defense sans main libero Bia General, who is out for the season with an elbow injury.

Jaja Santiago contributed 11 points including two blocks while Aiko Urdas had 8 as NU rose to a 6-6 slate.

The Lady Bulldogs got only their third win in 5 games in the second round of eliminations with two games remaining.

“If we get 8 wins we might get tied for fourth place. Maybe,” Gorayeb said. “But now I’m not thinking too much about getting that fourth place. I’m just thinking about winning this game so the players can recover the confidence they lost because of what they read or hear.”

In what has been a rocky season so far for the erstwhile Final Four contenders, the Lady Bulldogs displayed for the first time this round the aggression and teamwork they had lost.

NU started out strong to win set 1 comfortably, then withstood a blistering 7-0 run late in the second frame as UP rallied from a 14-23 deficit to trail just 21-23.

Pablo stopped the bleeding with a solid kill and Urdas finished the job off the block to silence the predominantly UP crowd.

Molde topscored for the Lady Maroons with 9 points on 7 attacks and a pair of aces while Diana Carlos added 7 markers as UP fell to 7-5, tied for third place with the FEU Lady Tamaraws. — Rappler.com
