DLSU-FEU preseason scuffle in Davao leads to double forfeiture

A preseason game between DLSU and FEU turns ugly as the game is abandoned

MANILA, Philippines – On the night of Friday, August 25, a tension-filled game of rival teams De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers and Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws erupted into a major scuffle that caused game officials to stop their match in the 2017 Kadayawan tournament at Almendras Gym in Davao.

What resulted was a two-segment brawl that happened 20 seconds before the third quarter came to a close.

In a Twitter video of @animodavao, the twitter account claimed that the first “commotion” was caused by FEU’s power forward Kevin Eboña, who was brought down by DLSU’s Ricci Rivero.

However, the same video footage was uploaded by FEU Athletic Director Mark Molina, who claimed that the first scuffle was caused by DLSU’s Kib Montalbo, who  headbutted FEU’s Kenneth Tuffin.

Game officials were able to restore order in the game, but not for long. A few moments after the short-lived peace, the organizers were unable to contain the second brawl that broke out. This caused the stoppage of the match, and eventually a double forfeiture in the tournament.

The game was already marred with foul play even before the uproar occurred, as FEU guard Ron Dennison incurred two unsportsmanlike fouls that caused him to be ejected from the game.

By the time the second brawl erupted, Dennison immediately got back on the court and managed to pack a punch on Montalbo. This caused the FEU guard to receive more dissatisfaction from DLSU fans, as per his history with unsportsmanlike fouls.

‘Right path’ not ‘retaliation’

Molina insinuated that the scuffle was planned by the DLSU side.

This led the FEU side to conclude that DLSU Coach Aldin Ayo plotted the “commotion” by allegedly teaching his players to retaliate.

Other members of the FEU management claimed that the DLSU coach had grabbed Arvin Tolentino by the neck while pulling him out of the scuffle, but the pressure had left him with marks on the back of his neck.

Until now, Ayo had yet to release a statement regarding his and the team’s actions. The Green Archers returned to Manila on Saturday, August 26.

Opening game hype

UAAP Basketball fans responded with excitement as the opening game of the two schools is set at 4 pm Sunday, September 10, at the Mall of Asia Arena.
