UP Lady Maroons keep Final 4 hopes burning with win over NU
MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – The University of the Philippines (UP) Lady Maroons bounced back from their two-game losing slump to keep the National University (NU) Lady Bulldogs winless in the second round with a sweep, 25-18, 25-22, 25-20, on Wednesday, April 4, at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
After absorbing setbacks in the first two sets, the Lady Bulldogs made it a one-point game midway through the set, 16-17. The Lady Maroons pulled away with Abbie Lim nabbing the match point with an ace, 24-18. NU took two points, but Jessma Ramos closed out the game for UP.
This is the first straight-set win of the Lady Maroons this Season 80.
The Lady Maroons improved their record to 4-8, while the Lady Bulldogs were stuck at 6 wins and have picked up a total of 6 losses in the UAAP Season 80 Women’s Volleyball tournament.
Tots Carlos continued to lead UP with 18 points off 14 spikes and 4 aces. Isa Molde followed with 10 points off 6 spikes and 4 aces of her own, while topping the team with 16 excellent digs and 5 excellent receptions.
The Lady Maroons made a total of 12 team aces.
Jaja Santiago led the Lady Bulldogs with 19 points of 15 spikes, 3 aces and one block.
The Lady Bulldogs got off to a 7-4 start until UP rallied back with 6 unanswered points to take the lead. NU’s defense continued to suffer as UP made a total of 6 aces in the first set alone, including Isa Molde’s ace that gave the Lady Maroons a 1-0 advantage.
In the second set, NU blew its 12-7 lead as Carlos tied the score at 13-all. The Lady Bulldogs escaped the stalemate capped by Santiago’s block, 18-14. Carlos lifted the Lady Maroons with 3 aces to give UP a two-point lead, 21-19. Ayel Estranero’s efforts in the last stretch gave UP at 2-0 advantage.
