MANILA, Philippines – As University of Santo Tomas goes for its first UAAP women’s volleyball championship in nearly a decade, the Golden Tigresses intend to show again that they’re built for the league’s biggest stage.
Led by new league MVP Sisi Rondina, UST plans to deliver another dominant showing against the Ateneo Lady Eagles in Game 2 of the Season 81 best-of-three finals on Wednesday, May 15.
The 5-foot-6 Rondina soared high for repeated, overpowering kills, while Rookie of the Year Eya Laure and fellow young gun Ysa Jimenez also did very well in the surprisingly quick dispatching of the blue side in Game 1 last Saturday.
Rondina alone had 23 points off 20 attacks while Ateneo, as a team, only had 4 more markers off spikes than the UST stalwart.
Ateneo, though, is no stranger to the situation.
Much like their previous two finals appearances in Seasons 78 and 79, the Lady Eagles find their backs against the wall when they take the floor at 3:30 pm at the Mall of Asia Arena.
It’s now or never for their star trio of Bea De Leon, Maddie Madayag and Kat Tolentino, all of whom are graduating at this season’s end.
So it’s no surprise that while UST alumni are busy flying in families of team stars like Rondina so they can watch live, the Lady Eagles have retreated to silence, opting to tune out from social media days before the finals.
If all goes well for UST, the volleyball crown will head back to España for the first time since 2010. Do the Lady Eagles have new tricks up their sleeves to stop that from happening?
