MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED 9:25pm) — The Ricky Dandan saga continues for University of the Philippines.

UP’s representative to the UAAP Board Prof. Ronualdo Dizer confirmed Sunday night, August 18 that Dandan is still the coach of the Fighting Maroons.

“As far as I am concerned, Ricky Dandan is still our coach,” Dizer said in a phone call. “I have not received a resignation letter nor have I fired anyone.”

Dizer, who is also Dean of the College of Human Kinetics, refuted earlier reports — including Rappler’s — that Dandan has quit his post.

He stressed that he, along with UP Diliman Chancellor Dr. Caesar Saloma, holds the power to hire and fire coaches of the university’s varsity teams.

Facebook post

A Facebook status posted by Dandan’s mother Virginia — and tweeted by his son and assistant coach Mark — said that it was the UP Alumni Association who fired the UP mentor.

It wasn’t UP CHK Dean Dizer who fired Ricky. It was the UP Alumni Association who unceremoniously sacked Ricky in the middle of the UAAP season and had already offered the job to a willing Rey Madrid, a boyhood friend whom Ricky trustingly took in from day one of his coaching stint as the team manager,” read the post.

The mother, a former dean of the UP College of Fine Arts, questioned the UPAA’s authority to fire Dandan and said that even the UP President or Chancellor would not think of going above the authority vested on a dean.

3-33 record

In less than 3 seasons at the helm, Dandan lost 33 of 36 UAAP men’s basketball games, going 2-12 in his rookie season in 2011 before finishing with just one win Season 75.

A loss to Ateneo de Manila University on Wednesday, August 14, extended the Maroons’ miseries as they dropped their 15th straight defeat dating back to last season.

UP last chalked up a win on August 19, 2012.

On Saturday night, August 17, Dandan tweeted about making a mistake in trusting people.

His son and assistant coach, Mark, also alluded to the ouster of Dandan as UP head coach in a reply to a tweet by journalist Rick Olivares.
