MANILA, Philippines — De La Salle University moved on the cusp of clinching a playoff berth after dealing University of the East a 75-65 overtime loss in the 76th UAAP men’s basketball tournament on Wednesday, September 4 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Green Archers trailed for most of the game before Jason Perkins gave them the lead for the first time with a tough jumper with 13.9 seconds left in regulation.

Norbert Torres then inexplicably fouled Roi Sumang while the latter was bringing the ball up, but fortunately for the Taft-based squad, Sumang made just one of two free-throws with 4.7 ticks remaining to force overtime.

Almond Vosotros and Perkins sank a 3-pointer apiece in an 10-3 run in the first 3 minutes of the extra period that gave La Salle a 64-59 lead that they would not give up in scoring its 5th straight win.

Perkins led his team with 22 points, 9 rebounds and two blocks while Vosotros provided the firepower early in the game and finished with 16 points and 5 boards.

The Archers are now tied with idle Far Eastern University at second place with an 8-4 record.

On the other hand, the Red Warriors could not take advantage of the surprise return of Charles Mammie in slipping to their 3rd consecutive defeat and a 5-6 card. – Rappler.com
