MANILA, Philippines – The Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles bounced back from its opening day loss after sweeping the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws, 25-19, 25-23, 25-18, in the 76th UAAP Women’s Volleyball tournament, Saturday, December 7 at The Arena in San Juan City.

After being blanked by National University in opening day, the Katipunan Avenue outfit responded well as they dominated FEU from start to finish to take their first win of the season and join the Lady Tamaraws in the standings at 1-1.

A consistent showing from Alyssa Valdez and Ana Gopico proved to be just enough for the Lady Eagles as they kept FEU at bay to hand Ateneo an easy win.

The Lady Eagles sizzled early as they turned what was a close start into a walkover, scoring 5 consecutive points midway in the opening frame to take the set, 25-19.

FEU had their best showing of the day in the second set as they battled the Lady Eagles all throughout frame, taking the match into 23-all but Gopico – with a little help from Julia Morado – shone just in time to give Ateneo the set, 25-23.

Just a set away from posting their first win, Valdez and Gopico then turned a 1-5 early deficit into a 12-10 lead midway in the third but FEU held on to engage the Lady Eagles to a joust – only to commit crucial errors and lose steam in end game.

Amy Ahomiro and Gopico then put on the finishing touches to complete Ateneo’s sweep of the Morayta-based side, 25-18.

NU takes solo lead

In the curtain-raiser, the Lady Bulldogs likewise blanked the University of the East Lady Warriors, 25-14, 25-22, 25-22 to occupy the top spot in the standings at 2-0.

Dindin Santiago and Carmina Aganon starred for NU as they finished with 16 and 13 points respectively while Sarina Faith Bulan and Jasmine Alcayde led the still win-less UE with 8 and 7.

The University of the Philippines Lady Maroons will take on Adamson University Sunday, December 8 while the De La Salle University Lady Archers and University of Santo Tomas Tigresses will square off in the second game for the right to share the top of the standings with NU. – Rappler.com
