National University's Lady Bulldogs defeated a game Adamson University in 4 sets

MANILA, Philippines – Aiming to end the first round of eliminations on a high note, the National University Lady Bulldogs put on just the right stops to endure the Adamson University Lady Falcons, 26-28, 25-21, 30-28, 25-20 in the 76th UAAP Women’s Volleyball tournament, Sunday, January 12, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.

NU, which secures the second spot with the win, displayed a balanced offensive all throughout as five Lady Bulldogs finished in double figures in a game that went down the line in every set.

Looking to extend their winning streak to three games coming into this match, Sheila Pineda once again starred for Adamson as she led her team to an early surge but the Santiago sisters answered back as they powered NU back into the game late in the opening set.

The in-form Pineda, however, secured a 1-0 set advantage for the Lady Falcons as she displayed steady composure to end the set in their favor at 28-26.

Shaken but not beaten, NU bounced back in the second set as Carmina Aganon spearheaded her team’s comeback efforts to take the second set 25-21.

With Dindin Santiago not feeling a hundred percent coming into this game, the rest of the Lady Bulldogs stood up to the occasion as Aiko Urdas and Myla Pablo both delivered one of their best performances so far this season in order to weather what could be Adamson’s best game this year.

Adamson put on a searing rally in the third set as they pushed the Lady Bulldogs to the edge but NU proved to be the more resilient of the teams as they finally took the third set, but only after an intense see-saw battle that ended 30-28 in their favor.

Aganon and Jaja Santiago then delivered the finishing blows as they capitalized on Adamson’s costly end-game mistakes to take their fourth straight win this season.

Aganon top scored for NU with 15 markers while Jaja finished with 14. Urdas and Pablo each finished with 13 as the older of the Santiago siblings still managed to salvage 12 points despite her injury.

Not even Pineda’s game-high 24 points and Amanda Villanueva’s 14 could give Adamson the W as no other Lady Falcon broke double digit scoring with Mayette Zapanta finishing with just 9. – Rappler.com
