MANILA, Philippines – The league-leading De La Salle University Lady Spikers came out again on top of the Ateneo De Manila University Lady Eagles, 25-14, 25-14, 25-19 to notch their eighth win in the 76th UAAP Women’s Volleyball tournament on Sunday, January 19, at the Arena in San Juan.

Just shortly after sweeping the Katipunan-based side in their penultimate match in the first round, the Lady Spikers once again shut Ateneo in straight sets as they retain tight grip of the top spot in the table, keeping their record spotless so far this season.

La Salle skipper Abi Marano led La Salle’s charge today as she finished with 10, anchoring the Lady Spikers’ 36 attacks that overshadowed Ateneo’s just 20.

Mika Reyes, Cyd Demecillo, and Ara Galang also provided ample support when they pitched in 8, 8, and 7 markers to help deal Ateneo its third defeat in their eight games in Season 76.

The reigning champions also did well in taking care of their possessions as they committed only 22 errors compared to Ateneo’s 29.

Ateneo, after finishing the first round at third in the table, had to bleed for points against La Salle as Alyssa Valdez was limited to just 10 points, while their next top scorer in Amy Ahomiro only added 6 markers.

Ateneo will next face the struggling University of the Philippines on Wednesday, January 22, while La Salle plays Adamson University on Saturday, 25.

Adamson shames UP in straight sets

Adamson University also grabbed a win today as they manhandled the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons in the day’s curtain-raiser, 25-15, 25-9, 25-19.

Unlike in their first round meeting which went the distance and was decided after five sets, the Lady Falcons set the record straight as they easily cruised through the Diliman crew in every set today.

Amanda Villanueva and Sheila Pineda provided the one-two combo for coach Sherwin Meneses’ troops when they combined for 27 points to power Adamson to their fourth win in Season 76 and tie FEU at fourth place in the table.

Playing catch-up all throughout the game, UP really had no chance against the resourceful Adamson squad that showed up this afternoon as they only put up 20 attacks compared to the Lady Falcons’ barrage of 43.

UP’s go-to girls in Angeli Araneta and Katherine Bersola could not do much today for their squad as they only tallied in 7 points apiece with all their teammates practically restricted to 3 points or less.

Villanueva top scored in the game with 14 while Pineda finished with 13. Mayette Zapanta, Mylene Paat, and Faye Guevarra also put on decent performances and pitched in 9 points each.

With the loss, UP goes down to 1-7, just a game ahead of tournament’s bottom dweller University of the East. – Rappler.com
