MANILA, Philippines – With their whole campaign at stake, Adamson University counted on the league’s second best scorer in Sheila Pineda as they halted Far Eastern University in four sets, 25-15, 17-25, 25-17, 25-23, in the 76th UAAP Women’s Volleyball tournament, Wednesday, February 5, at The Arena in San Juan City.

After pouring in 25 points in their loss against Ateneo de Manila, Pineda showed the way this time for the Lady Falcons as she finished with 20 markers – including the deciding hits in crunch time – to tow her squad to fourth place, overtaking the Lady Tamaraws in the table.

Adamson – eyeing to exact revenge after FEU clipped them in a grueling five-setter in their last meeting – put on a blistering start as they owned the attacks department in the opening frame, 13-5, while also scoring 10 off the Lady Tams’ errors for a 25-15 first set win.

Pineda then partnered with Marleen Cortel in the second as they took an 8-5 advantage but FEU – powered by its trademark blocking – fought back and led by as much as eight to tie the game at one set apiece, 25-17.

Adamson put on a scoring salvo to open the third frame as they zoomed to a 6-1 lead but Bernadette Pons and Geneveve Casugod worked their way back into the game and pulled FEU to within a point, 15-16.

Playing hurt after sustaining a torn ligament on her left knee in their last training, Remy Palma tried to turn the game around for FEU but the Lady Falcons’ 16 third set attacks proved to be handy as they went on to retake the driver seat with a 25-17 third set win.

With their backs against the wall, the Morayta-based squad turned a two-point deficit into a 21-15 edge as Marie Charlemagne Simborio found her groove in the fourth but Adamson detonated an 8-2 bomb to tie the game at 23-all.

Pineda then capped off her night as she put on the finishing touches in endgame, scattering six vital points during their game-changing run to take the fourth and end the match, 25-23.

With the win, Adamson – who has NU and UST as their last two assignments – joins FEU at 6-6 but takes the fourth spot from the Lady Tams through quotients. FEU is yet to face University of the Philippines and Ateneo de Manila before wrapping up the eliminations. – Rappler.com
