MANILA, Philippines – After another year of drama and intense action, the University Athletics Association of the Philippines closed another season with De La Salle University taking home the overall championship in a simple closing and awarding ceremonies held at the Grand Ballroom of the Century Park Hotel in Manila.

For the second straight year, the Taft Avenue-based school came out on top after capturing the championship in both men’s and women’s basketball, men’s table tennis, men’s taekwondo, women’s chess and women’s judo to garner a total of 289 overall points.

They also copped second in baseball and in men’s swimming and fencing events while also reaping top honors in women’s volleyball, table tennis, tennis, and badminton competitions to win only their second-ever crown since they took their first overall championship last year.

After copping 39 titles in the last 68 seasons, University of Santo Tomas failed to reclaim the overall championship this time as they finished right behind DLSU with 274 points, settling for silver after topping only two events in men’s and women’s taekwondo.

University of the Philippines, meanwhile, improves to third from its fifth place finish in Season 75, tallying in 235 points courtesy of their strong showing in the men’s and women’s swimming and in women’s table tennis.

Ateneo de Manila University and Far Eastern University finish fourth and fifth with 224 and 193 total points respectively with National University (169 points), University of the East (137), and Season 76 host Adamson University (117) completing the cast placing sixth, seventh, and last in the league.

FEU Lady Tamaraws cager Camille Sambile and De La Salle woodpusher Jodilyn Fronda, on the other hand, are hailed as this season’s co-athletes of the year while UP’s Katherine Bersola wins the UAAP Athlete-Scholar of the Year plum after an impressive performance in both athletics and academics.

In the Juniors Division, the UE Junior Warriors claimed the top prize with 139 points, while UST and Ateneo took the second and third honors with 121 and 108 points. Divine Romero of UE’s fencing team won the Juniors Division’s Athlete of the Year Award.

The UAAP hosting will now transfer from San Marcelino to Recto as UE takes over in Season 77, which opens on July 12 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum with the theme “Unity in Excellence.” – Rappler.com
