WATCH: Teng, Van Opstal, Perkins talk DLSU FilOil title win
De La Salle University Green Archers Jeron Teng, Jason Perkins and Arnold Van Opstal speak to Rappler about defeating the defending NCAA champion San Beda Red Lions to win the FilOil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup title

MANILA, Philippines – The De La Salle University Green Archers were in a celebratory mood on Sunday afternoon, June 8 after wrapping up the 2014 FilOil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup title with a 71-66 win over the defending NCAA champion San Beda Red Lions.

The win displayed the Green Archers’ heart and composure in the clutch as they climbed back from behind to beat a San Beda team that outrebounded and outscored them in the first half. (FULL STORY: UAAP beats NCAA: La Salle downs San Beda to win FilOil title)

Still, there was no sense of contentment within the La Salle camp; they know the true test for them starts in a month’s time when they look to defend their UAAP title in Season 77.

“It has no effect actually,” said FilOil MVP Jeron Teng. “We actually joined FilOil just to improve on our team chemistry. A while ago after the game Coach (Juno Sauler) just told us ‘This isn’t our goal; it’s far from our goal. Our main goal is UAAP; this is nothing. This shouldn’t be on our heads. We should focus on UAAP.”

Still, beating the Red Lions, who were by Baser Amer and his 23 points, is no small feat.

They’re really tough, especially with their size,” said Arnold Van Opstal, who scored 9 points for the Green Archers. “You have David Semerad, Anthony Semerad and they were dominating the boards. So basically Coach Jun focused on us crashing the boards in the second half and making sure we get the rebounds too because we’re not a small team. We ended up executing well and I think we’re the type of team that comes out in the fourth quarter.”

Jason Perkins, who added 14 points of his own, conceded that the team is still in the process of transitioning as a unit, working to shake off rust.

“We still have a lot of space to improve,” said Perkins. “Also taking time off, when you take time off there are a lot of sloppy parts, just mental lapses. But we’re going to get tighter closer to the UAAP, we’re happy that it happened now rather than later.”
