Ateneo, San Beda blank Ang Liga foes
MANILA, Philippines - The football teams of San Beda College and Ateneo De Manila University dominated their opponents on Saturday, July 12 to take wins in Week 4 of the Ang Liga pre-season tournament.
Ateneo, who were defeated by a Lyceum late game rally last week, came back with a vengeance by winning against the tough Rizal Technological University (RTU) booters, 3-0, at the Moro Lorenzo field.
At the start of the first half, the RTU booters swiftly launched their offensive to startle the Atenean defense, forcing the latter the commit mistakes.
Several shots on the goal of the Katipunan-based squad were made by RTU during the first 20 minutes of action but none of them found the back of the net.
On the other side, the ADMU offense jumpstarted their attack by relying mainly on through passes to launch their offensive barrage on the RTU goal.
Both teams went at it on the remaining part of the first half, exchanging strikes after strikes but both came home empty handed as the bland first half ended in a goalless tie.
Consequently, the tempo of the game instantly shifted on the start of the second half as Atenean high-scorer Emilio Acosta uncovered an opening in the RTU defense and punched one in on the 47th minute to open the scoring for his squad.
On the 78th minute, ADMU’s Julian Roxas capitalized on a through pass from their midfield to extend his squad’s lead to 2-0.
RTU tried to retaliate by launching an attack of their own but were denied by the Atenean back line.
Continuing the scoring frenzy of ADMU on the second half, Blue Booters’ captain Michael Mabanag showed off his agile footwork by leaving his defender and scoring the final goal for his squad.
San Beda scores back-to-back wins
NCAA football kings San Beda College Red Booters copped back-to-back wins by downing the University of the Philippines (UP) booters and National University’s team A (NU-A).
It proved to be a busy weekend for the Ang Liga defending champions as they were scheduled to play two consecutive games against two highly ranked football squads as a result of the cancelled July 6 games.
SBC’s mastery of the field was tested as they went against UAAP football powerhouse UP at the Moro Lorenzo field last July 12.
The game started slowly as both teams tried their luck by hurling attacks at each other to mark the opening half.
Senior striker Ashley Flores broke the scoring dry spell of the silent first half by flicking one into the UP goal to take the lead for San Beda on the 27th minute, 1-0.
The Fighting Maroons were quick to initiate a counter-attack on their antagonist's territory but San Beda’s defense rapidly denied their offensive blitz.
The veterans of the Mendiola-based kickers proved to be vital on their campaign as senior booter Dingdong Fornea managed to strike another goal for the red shirts on the 48th minute.
Two more goals were dropped in the final minutes of the last half as San Beda’s Connor and Torres managed to each tally goals on the 56th and 89th minute, respectively, to give their crew a dictating 4-nil win.
Meanwhile, the Red Booters also notched a 3-nil win against NU-A to complete their weekend Ang Liga football duty.
