MANILA, Philippines – The 2014 UAAP Cheerdance Competition takes place on Sunday, September 14, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

As always, the eight participating schools in the league will field their pep squads as they vie for one of the most sought-after crowns during the collegiate sports season.

Even if the university that wins the Cheerdance Competition will not get additional points in the UAAP overall championship tally, winning the contest has always been a goal for each of them considering the high stakes – such as cash prizes – and recognition that comes with prevailing in front of thousands at the coliseum and millions watching from home.

Since the Cheerdance Competition started in 1994, UP and UST lead the pack with 8 gold medals each. Including silver and bronze awards, the former leads the rest of the league with 18, while the latter isn’t far behind at second with 14.

In 2013, the UP Pep Squad (Party theme, 620.5 points) saw their 3-year Cheerdance Competition reign come to an end as they placed second, while the UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe (Egyptian theme) had a disappointing fifth-place finish.

The club that usurped the three-time defending champion was the National U Pep Squad, which used an Arabian theme (696.5 points) en route to winning their first gold medal, and second in total, in cheerdance history.

Coming in third in Season 76’s Cheerdance Competition was the Animo Pep Squad of De La Salle University (Military theme, 596.5 points), who won their fourth silver medal to add to their two other bronze plums. In Season 77, La Salle will aim to win their first ever gold.

Another team to look out for is the FEU Cheering Squad. From 2003-2012, Far Eastern University missed finishing in the top three only once before they came in fourth place in 2013. In total, they’re tied with UST with 14 medals, 9 of which are bronze.

The Adamson Pep Squad (Burlesque theme in 2013), Ateneo Blue Babble Batallion (Sports theme in 2013), and UE Red Squad (Fire theme in 2013) round up the rest of the pack. Each team has won only one silver medal during their time at the Cheerdance Competition.

The order for the 2014 Cheerdance Competition will go as follows:

1. UE Red Squad

2. FEU Cheering Squad

3. UP Pep Squad

4. UST Sallingawi Dance Troup

5. Ateneo Blue Babble Batallion

6. DLSU Animo Squad

7. Adamson Pep Squad

8. National U Pep Squad
