Lady Eagles soar to 4th straight win with sweep of Tigresses
The Lady Eagles have yet to lose a set in Season 77

MANILA, Philippines – The Ateneo Lady Eagles sucked the confidence out of the UST Tigresses for an easy 25-21, 25-13, 25-19 sweep and their 4th consecutive victory in the women’s volleyball tournament of UAAP Season 77 on Saturday, December 6 at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Alyssa Valdez once again led Ateneo with 22 points built on 19 hits and 3 aces. In spite of Valdez’s solid production, the defending champions relied on balanced contribution to win.

Ella de Jesus registered 12 points on 10 kills while Bea de Leon chipped in 6 markers. Amy Ahomiro and Jhoana Maraguinot added 4 points apiece for the Lady Eagles, who took a 42-25 advantage over the Tigresses in attack points.

Ateneo struggled for their bearings in the early goings of the opening set but they pulled it together late and relied on the reigning MVP to find the holes on UST’s side.

The Lady Eagles took full control of the second set, highlighted by a 7-0 run punctuated by a Valdez ace which put them on top, 17-9.

With UST’s body language indicative of their dwindling confidence, Ateneo smelled blood and went for the kill in the third set, capitalizing on the Tigresses’ timely errors.

The Lady Eagles have yet to lose a set in Season 77.

The Tigresses dropped their third straight game after opening the tournament with a victory over the hapless UE Lady Red Warriors.

Floor defense, coverage, and reception were the main problems UST failed to address throughout this game. Ateneo cashed in 24 points off their opponent’s errors as UST tallied an inefficient 15-of-67 receives throughout the game.

The Tigresses also found no answer to Valdez and setter Jia Morado constantly targeting the donut hole behind the blockers, which often resulted to easy points off power tips by Valdez.

UST coach Odjie Mamon was relentless in shuffling and finding the right combination of players, to no avail. None of his players scored in double figures.

Jessey de Leon was UST’s top scorer with 8 points while Marivic Meneses and EJ Laure added 7 and 6 markers, respectively.

Scores:

Ateneo: Valdez 22, De Jesus 12, De Leon 6, Maraguinot 4, Ahomiro 4, Morado 3.

UST: De Leon 8, Meneses 7, Laure 6, Rondina 4, Cortez 3, Lastimosa 2, Tunay 2.
