MANILA, Philippines – Former Ateneo Blue Eagle Hubert Cani is set to transfer to Far Eastern University (FEU) and play for the Tamaraws in the men’s basketball tournament of the UAAP, Rappler has learned.

Cani, a former star player for the National University (NU) Bullpups in the UAAP juniors tournament, did one year of residency in 2014 before seeing action for Ateneo. He had to sit out one year as he transferred from a UAAP high school to another UAAP college.

In his first and only season as a Blue Eagle, Cani played 11 games and averaged 0.6 points and 0.6 assists a game.

The 5-foot-10 point guard would have missed the upcoming 2016 UAAP men’s basketball season had he stayed with Ateneo after being unable to meet the university’s standard passing grade for student-athletes.

Cani, who confirmed his FEU transfer to Rappler early Tuesday, June 28, will now have to serve another year of residency due to the UAAP’s rule for transferring colleges. He will only get to suit up for the Tamaraws as early as the 2017 season.

A source close to Cani who requested for anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the topic said that it was mainly the young student-athlete’s relationships with the FEU coaching staff that paved the way for the transfer.

Cani, who was also being eyed by Adamson and Letran after deciding to leave Ateneo, is very familiar with FEU head coach Nash Racela and assistants Eric Gonzales and Richard Ticzon owing to his RP Youth team days.

The source also said that Cani felt the sincerity of FEU sports director Mark Molina as he aims to regain his confidence; wanted to study in a good school; and felt that both the FEU administration and community really wanted his services.

The Tamaraws are also the UAAP defending champions and have made the men’s basketball finals for two straight years, which influenced Cani’s final decision.

Last week, Rappler received confirmation that Cani’s teammate in Ateneo, Jerie Pingoy, also transferred and is going to play for the Adamson Soaring Falcons. Rappler also learned this month that FEU is the frontrunner to land the services of former UAAP Rookie of the Year Arvin Tolentino. – Rappler.com
