FEU takes top spot in UAAP football

MANILA, Philippines – The Far Eastern University men’s football team took the number one spot in the UAAP football tilt after dominating Ateneo De Manila University, 4-0, at the FEU-Diliman pitch on Thursday, February 12.

FEU opened the match with a series of blows towards the defense of Ateneo, forcing the latter to concede a penalty in the 38th minute that was consequently sank by Arnel Amita.

Problems piled up for the Blue Booters as a miscommunication between Atenean defender Wilson Marcelino and keeper JP Oracion lead to another goal for the home team, this time by Eric Giganto in the 56th minute.

To put the cherry on top of the successful outing, Amita completed his hat-trick later in the match after finding the back of the net during 67th and 83rd minutes.

The Tamaraws dumped Ateneo to the fourth spot and overtook UP in the top seed after edging the Maroons by four points in goal difference.

Meanwhile, National University booters shrugged off the kickers of the University of Santo Tomas, 2-1, to keep their final four hopes alive during the second round of the collegiate tournament.

The España-based booters were off to a quick start as they took an early advantage swiftly after the opening whistle via a goal by Gino Clariño in the 3rd minute.

UST held on to their slim 1-0 lead until the 64th minute when Patrick Valenzuela scored a header off a corner to equalize both teams at 1-1.

Striker Paolo Salenga stunned the crowd during the stoppage period of the second half as he slotted the ball to the far corner of the goal to take the lead for NU before the time expired. – Rappler.com
