UP Lady Maroons head coach Godfrey Okumu debunks rumors that he had been removed from his post

MANILA, Philippines – University of the Philippines (UP) Lady Maroons head coach Godfrey Okumu will remain in his post in UAAP Season 82 as he debunked rumors of his removal.

“That is all fake news,” Okumu told Rappler when asked about social media posts circulating about his supposed sacking.

Reports surfaced that the team’s main backer had sacked Okumu because of a disappointing season and was allegedly actively looking for a replacement.

However, the UP College of Human Kinetics released a statement confirming the non-termination of his contract.

“Mr Okumu has a live contract with the UP College of Human Kinetics and the University of the Philippines, and as such, will continue to coach, train, and recruit players for the UPWVT,” it said.

After a stunning preseason, the former Kenyan national team coach failed to lead the UP women’s volleyball team to the Final Four in his second year on the job.

The Lady Maroons finished fifth in Season 81 after being swept by National University, preventing them from forcing a playoff for the top 4 spots.
