UV Green Lancers sweep USJ-R to win 8th Cesafi Partner's Cup

CEBU CITY, Philippines - The Worthy-University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers swept the 8th Cesafi Partner's Cup best-of-3 Finals with a 72-68 Game 2 victory over the Mighty Sports-University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars Saturday, June 11, at the Cebu Coliseum in downtown Cebu City.

The Green Lancers hardly looked troubled despite the departure of two of their key players, Jun Manzo and Leonard Santillan, who will now be playing for the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons in the UAAP, and playing without their head coach Gary Cortes.

Ralph Jude Dinolan kept the Jaguars’ hopes alive when he tied the score at 68-all after rebounding a missed attempt by Albert Catiloc and scoring on a putback with 1:27 left to play. Dinolan’s momentum would be short-lived as he picked up his fifth foul in the ensuing play against UV’s Liberian reinforcement Bassiere Sackor. Sackor sank one of his two free throws to take a slim lead.

With the seconds trickling out, UV further pulled ahead with two more gift shots from Jerome Napao while the Jaguars continued to lose their grip on the ballgame. Juan Miguel Gastador fumbled an inbound pass from Ricky Dyn Peromingan, whose 21 points went for naught, to hand possession back to UV.

UV’s promising rookie Tristan Albina sealed the title for the Green Lancers by sinking one of his two gift shots. Leading the scoring for the Worthy-UV Green Lancers was Michael Angelo Macion, who had 18 points, 10 rebounds and one assist. Rey Suerte contributed 14 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists while Napao finished with 13 points.

The Mighty Sports-USJR Jaguars were led by Peromingan who sizzled with 21 points in a losing cause. Dinolan handed in 14 points, 10 of which he scored in the fourth quarter, while Jaybie Mantilla added 11.

UV’s Suerte was named Most Valuable Player of this pre-Cesafi tournament aside from being named into the Mythical 5’s shooting guard position. Joining him are point guard Mantilla (USJ-R), forward Mark Jayven Tallo (Southwestern University), power forward Garciano Puerto (University of Cebu) and center Sackor also of UV.
