CEBU CITY, Philippines - The University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers survived a determined University of San Jose Recoletos (USJR) Jaguars, 82-72, to remain on top of the leaderboard in the collegiate division of the CESAFI basketball tournament, Thursday, September 28, at the New Cebu Coliseum.
The other collegiate game saw the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors edging the Southwestern University (SWU) Phinma Cobras, 76-72.
While the Green Lancers, the Jaguars, the Warriors and the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters are all assured of the top 4 spots, the Green Lancers is the only team confirmed on their current spot.
And, a loss in their final elimination game coming this Saturday, September 30, against the Cebu Institute of Technology University (CITU) Wildcats will not make a difference on their position.
This, after the Green Lancers have all but sealed their position at the top of the leaderboard with a 10-1 win-loss record.
The Jaguars, on the other hand, remain at the second spot with an 8-3 slate following their loss to the Green Lancers.
Who will face who in the semifinal round will be determined on the final day of elimination this Saturday with the Jaguars to face the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers, and the Warriors and the Webmasters to go up against each other.
At present, the Warriors is at the third spot with a 7-4 slate while the Webmasters is at the fourth spot with a 6-5 card.
The number one ranked team will face the fourth rated team while second seed will face the third seeded team in the semifinal round with the top two teams enjoying a twice-to-beat advantage.
The Green Lancers showcased their determination to stay on top by opening the ballgame with a 9-0 run. A trey from Tricky Dyn Peromingan started the ball rolling for the Jaguars who managed to trail by only 3 points, 14-17, at the end of the first quarter.
The second canto had the Green Lancers pulling away to as much as 14 points before settling to a 10-point advantage, 40-30, at the halftime break.
The Green Lancers continued to lord it over the Jaguars in the third quarter until MVP contender Jaybie Mantilla sparked a 12-0 run that brought them at just a point behind, 44-45.
Josue Segumpan managed to wedge a gap for the Green Lancers with a triple, however, Ralph Jude Dinolan tied the game at 51-all en route to the Jaguars enjoying a slim one point lead, 57-56, going into the final canto.
The Jaguars then waxed hot early in the fourth quarter before the lead exchanged hands several times.
A shot from Jerome Napao with 6 minutes remaining handed the lead to the Green Lancers and from there, they started pulling away and did not look back..
Monic Soliva topscored for the Green Lancers with 15 points while Napao finished with a double-double with his 13 points and 11 rebounds.
The Jaguars had a 15-point output from Dinolan and Mantilla.
In the other game, the Warriors, who had enjoyed a 20-point lead, was able to end an onslaught administered by the Cobras. The game deadlocked 5 times in the fourth quarter before the Warriors were able to pull away for a 76-72 win.
Malcolm Joe Tan and Kurt Ian Trangia led the Warriors with 13 points each while the Cobras enjoyed a 15-point output from Jobanie Luz.
