UV Green Lancers win Game 2, force winner-take-all showdown with UC Webmasters

CEBU CITY, Philippines (UPDATED) - The defending champions University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers kept their title bid alive with a 77-66 Game 2 victory over the UC Webmasters Friday, October 13 at the New Cebu Coliseum to even the series at 1-1.

Game 3 will be on Sunday, October 15 at 4 pm.

Prior to Game 2, special awards in the collegiate division were given away. USJR Jaguars point guard Jaybie Mantilla bagged the prestigious Most Valuable Player award.

Also making it to the vaunted Mythical 5 along with Mantilla were UV Green Lancers shooting guard Rey Anthony Suerte and power forward Jerome Napao, UC Webmasters center Garciano "Garexx" Puerto, Jr., and USC Warriors small forward John Reel Saycon.

Napao and Tristan Ray Albina led the Green Lancers with 18 points each, while Napao also added 9 rebounds.

The Green Lancers also received much help from Suerte who had a double-double after he sank 13 points and 10 rebounds. He also had 5 assists and 4 steals.

The Green Lancers opened the ballgame looking like the champions that they are, posting an early 12-point lead, 21-9, with a few minutes left in the first quarter.

The Webmasters managed to bring the Green Lancers lead to 8, 13-21, on back-to-back baskets from Ruben Ludovice and John Calvin Jabello going into the second quarter.

Webmasters Cameroonian import Frederick Ngoh Elombi then waxed hot with 8 straight points plus a basket from Ludovice brought them close at just two points behind, 23-25, with 6 minutes remaining before the halftime break.

With a little more than two minutes remaining, Joven Tagudin swayed the lead to the Webmasters side and with the help from Elombi and Justine Dacalos, UC ended the second quarter with a 5-point advantage, 36-31, over UV.

With their third title on the line, the Webmasters capitalized on their speed to pull away to a 10-point advantage, 48-38, in the third quarter.

However, Josue Segumpan sparked a rally for the Green Lancers and with Tristan Ray Albina and Monic Soliva helping, they managed to close the gap and eventually wrested the lead to their side.

The third quarter ended with the Green Lancers managing to hold on to a 3-point advantage, 54-51.

The fourth quarter opened with Elombi and Green Lancers Liberian import Bassieru Sackor both getting into foul trouble.

Suerte also found his range in the final canto, scoring 9 of his 13 points.

Albina also continued sinking his baskets while Napao wreaked havoc under the goal.

Further compounding the problem for the Webmasters was the fouling out of the speedy Dacalos in the third quarter and Jabello in the fourth quarter.

Ludovice was a surprise for UC as he registered a double-double with 10 points and a massive 16 rebounds.
