After a one-week delay due to quarantine restrictions, the Chooks-to-Go VisMin Super Cup Mindanao leg tipped off with double-header action from the Ipil Provincial Gym in Zamboanga Sibugay on Wednesday, July 7.
Basilan drubs Zamboanga del Sur
In the conference’s first-ever game, the Basilan Peace Riders, formerly the Steel of the MPBL, decimated ALZA-Alayon Zamboanga del Sur with an 82-48 blowout win.
Michael Mabulac led the way with an 18-point, 11-rebound double-double on a near-perfect 8-of-9 clip in just 18 minutes as a starter while Hesed Gabo lit up the bench mob with 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting.
Following a low-scoring opening period where the Basilan led, 15-7, the Riders then shifted to a higher gear with a 25-7 second quarter burst for the 26-point halftime lead, 40-14.
Things only got worse for Zamboanga del Sur from there as Basilan peaked with a 42-point advantage, 78-36, off a Darwin Lunor turnaround shot with 4:24 left in regulation.
Dan Sara led the sorry loss as the only Zambo player in double-digit scoring with 17 points on a 5-of-14 clip. The team as a whole was limited to just 27% shooting, and was outrebounded by the superior Basilan side, 57-34.
Kapatagan trips Iligan
The second game of the day turned out to be a more competitive one as the Kapatagan Buffalo Braves survived the Iligan City Archangels, 64-56.
Coming off a 48-36 lead entering the payoff period, the Braves were handed a real scare by the Archangels as they all but erased their deficit to one, 51-52, off a 15-4 run capped by a Magic Marata triple at the 5:14 mark.
Iligan was well within striking distance, 55-60, in the final minute of regulation, but big man John Rabe ended all comeback hopes with a travel off a ball scramble with just 24 ticks left on the clock.
Renz Palma led all scorers with 18 points on 7-of-16 shooting with 6 rebounds and 4 assists while former Ginebra guard Teytey Teodoro chipped in 9 markers and 2 steals.
Joel Lee Yu paced the Archangels in the tough loss with 16 points, but only shot 7-for-20 from the field.
The league will feature another double-header on Thursday, July 8, with the Roxas Vanguards starting the day off against the Pagadian Explorers. Clarin Sto. Nino will then wrap up the slate with a match against MisOr Brew Authoritea.
