The VisMin Super Cup has conditionally lifted its suspension on ARQ Builders-Lapu Lapu player Rendell Senining on Wednesday, April 28, following a “careful and thorough” investigation with the Games and Amusements Board (GAB).
“Rendell Senining has been cleared of any game-fixing allegations in connection to the April 14 game,” said league chief operating officer Rocky Chan.
Senining was brought to national attention as one of the players implicated in Lapu Lapu’s controversial game against the now-banned Siquijor Mystics.
He was initially handed with a season-long suspension and a P30,000 fine for “acts disrespectful to the game,” which may have included his viral moment where he shot free throws alternating with both hands.
However, after consultations with GAB and other coaches, the punishments will be lifted on the conditions that Senining comes out with a public apology, leads the league’s outreach activities, and accepts an outright ban in the event of a repeat offense.
“Rest assured, if that situation happens again, I know what to do and what I will do will be the right way,” Senining said.
The league’s head of basketball operations Chelito Caro did not take part in the reviews as he was previously the head coach of ARQ Builders.
Chan, meanwhile, has assured that the investigation is still ongoing, and that the league will continue to police its own ranks.
“Allow me to reassure the general public that we are continuing to do our share in addressing the issue of game-fixing in basketball,” he said.
“May this serve as a gentle reminder and warning to everyone playing in the Visayas leg to play to the best of their abilities, and please do not test our resolve in putting this house in order.”
Senining is just the latest in a string of players given a second chance by the fledgling league, with the others being Lapu Lapu player Monbert Arong, and former Siquijor players Miguel Castellano and Michael Sereno. – Rappler.com
