The Chooks-to-Go VisMin Super Cup is set to resume action on Wednesday, July 7, after its Mindanao leg got clearance from the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) to be held at the Ipil Heights Provincial Gym in Zamboanga Sibugay.
The upstart pro league needed to change venues after its original spot in Pagadian, Zamboanga del Sur, was placed under modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) last June 15, which prompted a delay from its initial June 22 start.
Now back in a general community quarantine (GCQ) setting in Ipil, VisMin will start its Mindanao tournament with a Wednesday, 1 pm game between ALZA Alayon Zamboanga Del Sur and the Basilan Peace Riders, formerly the Basilan Steel of the MPBL.
For the second game at 3 pm, ex-Ginebra guard Teytey Teodoro will banner the Kapatagan Buffalo Braves as they take on 20-year-old stud Jericho Montecalvo and the Iligan City Archangels.
The league will then host more games in Ipil on July 8, 9, 11, and 13, before tentatively moving back to Pagadian by July 15 if quarantine measures relax in the area.
VisMin chief operating officer Rocky Chan reportedly only had two days to get clearance from the local government units and the Games and Amusements Board (GAB) in order to stick with the new tip-off date.
“We are just happy that Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay, accepted us without hesitation as we tip-off our Mindanao leg,” he said.
However, hectic situations like these are nothing new for Chan, who had to right the ship in its maiden voyage as the Visayas leg was rocked with game-fixing allegations that reached national attention.
In the fallout of the major controversy that led to multiple player suspensions and the Siquijor Mystics team being banned from the league, GAB initially suspended the Mindanao leg on April 19 for further investigations before lifting the ban last May 11. – Rappler.com
