MANILA, Philippines – Far Eastern University bounced back from a tough loss at the end of eliminations and blasted the listless College of St. Benilde, 25-21, 25-6, 25-17, to start their quarterfinals campaign on a high note in the Shakey’s V-League 12 Collegiate Conference Sunday, August 16, at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
Coming off a stinging defeat to National University after previously holding a 4-0 slate, FEU was out to vindicate itself as Bernadeth Pons put up an all-around performance of 14 points that included 10 attacks, two blocks and 5 digs.
Guest players Honey Royce Tubino and Jovelyn Gonzaga posted 9 and 8 points, respectively, despite not starting for the Lady Tamaraws.
The Morayta-based crew imposed their will on the Lady Blazers on all fronts. They converted 10 points from the service deck while setter Kyle Negrita outplayed counterpart Djanel Cheng, 17-9, in excellent sets.
Benilde looked up for the challenge in the opening set but severely deflated in the second frame. Their body language told the story as they moved slowly and appeared out of sync as they were forced down a 25-6 hole.
Lady Blazers coach Michael Cariño tried to wake his team up in the third set as the Lady Tamaraws zoomed to a 14-5 lead, but it was short-lived and FEU stayed on cruise control for the win.
Benilde’s Jannine Navarro and Jeanette Panaga were limited to just 5 and 3 points, respectively, after both led the league in scoring at the end of the elimination round. – Rappler.com
