UST’s Cherry Rondina hopes Grand Prix success carries over to UAAP
The Cebu native hopes to bring more maturity to the Lady Tigresses after winning the PSL Grand Prix with the Foton Tornadoes

MANILA, Philippines – To say that Cherry Rondina has had a memorable 2016 would be an understatement.

While the Tigresses failed to reach the semifinals of the UAAP Season 78 Women’s Volleyball tournament, the Cebuana native still managed to bag some success in the latter part of the year.

Rondina led her team to the Final Four of the Shakey’s V-League 13th Reinforced Conference before succumbing to eventual champions Pocari Sweat. The energetic open spiker was likewise the centerpiece in UST’s flawless championship run in the UAAP Season 79 Beach Volleyball tournament last October, where Rondina also earned her second Most Valuable Player award in 3 years.

With all these feats under her belt, winning a Grand Prix championship was just the “cherry” on top to end Rondina’s impressive year.

The Espana standout and her college teammate EJ Laure played for the Foton Tornadoes, who successfully defended the Grand Prix crown in the recently concluded Philippine Super Liga last Saturday, December 10.

Rondina, a product of Compostela National High School in Cebu, hopes that her off-season attainments can bring about a positive impact on the Tigresses’ journey back to the top next year when UAAP volleyball starts up on February 4, 2017.

Siguro po ‘yung maturity po, kung paano maging leader and how to play like a veteran,” Rondina answered when asked what she could bring to the table for UAAP after winning the PSL title.

(Maybe the maturity, how to be a leader and how to play like a veteran)

Siguro, hopefully naka-gain kami ng technique para madala namin sa UAAP. And hopefully, sana maapply namin ‘yun.”

(Hopefully we gained some techniques that we could bring to the UAAP. And hopefully, we can apply them.) –
