TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan — Philippine Air Force put on a spectacular show as they walloped Adamson University in 4 sets in Day 1 of the 5th Governor Alvaro Antonio Friendship Games on Monday, June 24 at the People’s Gymnasium here.
Former UST standout Maika Ortiz proved to be too hot to handle as she starred in Air Force’s 25-21, 25-10, 17-25, 25-22 triumph over the Lady Falcons and book a date with seeded Army on Tuesday, June 25.
“Nag-stand out talaga si Maika,” said Air Force coach Clarence Esteban. “We had a good game up front although medyo nag-lie-low sila nung 3rd set. Buti na lang, we pulled it off in the 4th set.”
After dropping a close 3rd frame, the Airwomen survived a late surge by Adamson in the 4th by leaning on Wendy Semana and Ortiz, who both delivered in crunch time to seal the deal for the veteran side.
In other Day 1 matches, Ritz Tower Tacloban came from a first-set deficit to turn back College of Saint Benilde, 21-25, 25-21, 25-12, 27-25, while Urdaneta’s Nova Bolei swept Letran, 25-18, 26-24, 25-21.
Tomorrow, Nova Bolei faces a tough Tuguegarao side backstopped by Fille Cainglet, Sue Roces, Angela Benting and Jang Bualee while Cagayan squares off with Ritz Tower Tacloban to determine the 3 teams who battle in a round-robin format for the championship.
The Friendship Games is a part of the week-long Aggao Nac Cagayan (Araw ng Cagayan) festivities.
In the men’s division, National University blanked the Makati Idols, 25-15, 25-16, 25-13, while Perpetual Help won by default over Ateneo de Manila University.
National College of Business and Arts edged TVM, 26-24, 25-21, 25-22, even as Army went through the wringer before beating Artista, 30-28, 25-19, 16-25, 19-25, 15-13. – Rappler.com
