Philippine volleyball stars Jaja Santiago and Alyssa Valdez continued to banner the star-studded list of names invited to try out for the country’s national team pool.
The Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) scheduled a three-day tryout from April 28 to 30 in Subic for the indoor volleyball, beach volleyball and junior volleyball squads for both the men’s and women’s divisions.
The national federation sent out invitations to 40 women and 40 men for the indoor tryouts to be held at the Subic Gym, while 20 women and 20 men were called to try out for the beach volleyball squads at the Subic Tennis Courts.
The tryouts come weeks after the 6-foot-5 Santiago was offered a Japanese citizenship after leading her Japan V.League squad Ageo Medics to a championship in the top tier cup tournament.
“The PNVF is currently prioritizing its elite/high-performance initiatives through the National Team Commission,” said PNVF president Ramon Suzara.
“The national team will be focusing on the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi in December.”
The athletes, coaches, organizers, and officials involved will undergo RT-PCR tests 48 hours before the tryouts with a guaranteed turnaround time of 24 hours.
Suzara and PNVF secretary general Donaldo Caringal and medical commission head Dr. Jose Raul Canlas met with Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority officials and Philippine Red Cross officers at the Subic Gym on Monday, April 19 to finalize health and safety protocols.
“These tryouts are needed in order for the athletes to be at their optimal condition prior to key competition events this year,” Suzara said.
National coaches Arthur “Odjie” Mamon (women’s volleyball), Dante Alinsunurin (men’s volleyball), Paul Jan Doloiras (women’s beach volleyball), and Rhovyl Verayo (men’s beach volleyball) will supervise the tryouts.
