The PLDT volleyball franchise finds a new home in the PVL

Former Philippine Superliga (PSL) team PLDT Home Fibr Hitters are set to join the recently-professionalized Premier Volleyball League (PVL) in their opening season this year.

Sports Vision Management Group president Ricky Palou confirmed the news to Rappler on Thursday, February 4 after striking the Cignal TV deal.

According to Palou, PSL team Cignal has yet to decide whether to make the move to the league organized by Sports Vision.

“I know PLDT will join the PVL. We’ll know in about a week on Cignal’s decision,” Palou told Rappler in a text message.

PLDT is set to compete against three-time champion Creamline, Choco Mucho, Petro Gazz, BanKo Perlas, and Balipure/Chef’s Classics.

This will also see the league reunion of PLDT head coach Roger Gorayeb with former Ateneo ward and Creamline star Alyssa Valdez, but on the opposite sides of the court.

After winning his battle against cancer, the multi-titled head coach decided to continue working from the sidelines.

The PVL, which has been broadcasted on ABS-CBN Sports since 2018, found a new TV home after signing a new three-year broadcast partnership deal with Cignal TV.

The league is set to kick off on April 10 in a bubble set up located at the National University (NU) Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna.

PVL officially became the country’s first professional volleyball tournament last November even after the three-conference commercial league got shuttered due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since the league officially took over the Shakey’s V-League in 2017, the Creamline Cool Smashers have copped 3 conference titles, led by national team stalwarts Valdez, Jia Morado and Jema Galanza. – Rappler.com
