PVL Finals: 'We deserve to win,' says PetroGazz import Johnson

MANILA, Philippines – Playing just a year in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL), the PetroGazz Angels already positioned themselves within a win from the highly coveted title.

"We want to prove people wrong. Just because we’re a new team doesn’t mean we don’t deserve to win," said American import Janisa Johnson, who provided the firepower the Angels needed to force a Game 3 in the best-of-three title series against Creamline.

Johnson and Wilma Salas, the  2019 PVL Reinforced Conference Best Foreign Guest Player, scored 23 points each to silence the predominantly pink and white crowd supporting the defending champions at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

Their composure helped the team rally back from a 10-point deficit in the opening frame and control the rest of the match. (HIGHLIGHTS: PetroGazz vs Creamline - PVL Finals 2019 Game 2)

"We want to do this for the girls because [many of them] haven’t been in the finals so for me, because of that, they’re pushing me and I’m pushing them too," added Johnson.

With the do-or-die finals game happening in less than 24 hours, PetroGazz believes that momentum is on their side, especially with Creamline not having any back-to-back weekend games scheduled the entire season.

But Johnson is bracing for a fightback as the Cool Smashers went on a 12-game winning streak after PetroGazz's upset in the conference opener.

"The last time we beat them, they came back. Of course, they’re coming back tomorrow. We got no choice but to be ready," said Johnson.

Game 3 is set on Sunday, July 14, 4 pm, at the Ynares Center in Antipolo. – Rappler.com
