Layug, Santiago sisters lead Chery Tiggo sweep of Cignal for 2nd win

The Chery Tiggo Crossovers hardly broke a sweat in their second Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Open Conference match as they crushed the Cignal HD Spikers in three sets, 25-16, 25-13, 25-19, at the Bacarra, Ilocos Norte bubble on Monday, July 19.

Arianne Layug was named Player of the Game with 15 points off 11 attacks, 3 aces, and 1 block. Jaja Santiago likewise chipped in 15 markers off 11 spikes, while her sister Dindin Manabat added 7 points in just two sets played.

While it looked like Chery Tiggo was headed for a runaway win after a 14-5 blitz in the third set to make an 8-6 lead swell to a 22-11 gap, Cignal stormed back with an 8-1 run to inch within 4 points, 19-23.

However, it was too little, too late as Elaine Kasilag shut the door on the Spikers’ comeback hopes with one final ace for the win.

Janine Marciano led Cignal’s sorry loss with 12 points off 10 attacks while Rachel Anne Daquis added 6 markers.

Off a convincing opening-set win, the Santiago sisters further flexed their dominance in the second set with an 8-2 run to turn a 5-4 lead to 13-6.

Although Cignal put up a valiant fight to inch within 4 points, 13-17, the Crossovers decided to end the HD Spikers’ scoring spree right there as they ran away with an 8-0 shutdown to take the second set.

The Crossovers will look to earn a three-game winning streak as they next face the BaliPure Water Defenders on Thursday, July 22. Meanwhile, Cignal will look to enter the win column with a Wednesday, July 21 game against the Sta. Lucia Lady Realtors. – Rappler.com
