Fresh from ending Creamline's 25-game winning streak, Chery Tiggo earns its fifth win in seven games after making quick work of Petro Gazz

The Chery Tiggo Crossovers continued their high-speed cruise through the 2021 Premier Volleyball League Open Conference with a stunning 25-18, 25-20, 25-22 sweep of the contending Petro Gazz Angels on Sunday, August 1.

Fresh off dealing the Creamline Cool Smashers their first loss after 25 straight games, the Crossovers roared ahead to a 5-2 record for at least a semis playoff, while leapfrogging the Angels who fluttered down to a 4-2 slate.

The Santiago sisters again led the charge in this rout, with Jaja tallying 20 points off 16 attacks, 3 blocks, and an ace, while Dindin chipped in 12 markers off 10 spikes.

Petro Gazz started off strong as expected in the third set with its back against the wall, as it led, 18-16, off a Ces Molina kill. However, Chery Tiggo responded well and tied the set at 20-all after a Manabat ace and a Maika Ortiz drop shot.

That was all the momentum the Crossovers needed as they eventually ran away with a final 3-0 kick sparked by a costly Remy Palma service error and followed by back-to-back Santiago spikes for the quick finish.

“We have some challenges along the way, but we were able to still work on it,” said head coach Aaron Velez after another statement win. “I’m just glad and happy for the ladies that they were able to lead the team and deliver.”

“There are still more games and more opportunities. We just have to master it and be more consistent with the system.”

Top blocker Ria Meneses led the Angels in the losing effort with 11 points off 8 attacks and 2 rejections, while Molina and Myla Pablo added 9 markers apiece.

Chery Tiggo will look to formalize its playoff berth with another win at 3 pm on Wednesday, August 4, against the middling, but dangerous Black Mamba Army Lady Troopers.

Meanwhile, Petro Gazz will try to avenge its snapped three-game winning streak and bounce back against the upset-happy BaliPure Water Defenders at 3 pm on Tuesday, August 3. – Rappler.com
