Cignal recovers from horror 3rd set to down Sta. Lucia

The Cignal HD Spikers entered the win column in the 2021 PVL Open Conference off an up-and-down four-set win against the Sta. Lucia Lady Realtors, 25-22, 25-18, 13-25, 25-20, at the Bacarra, Ilocos Norte bubble on Wednesday, July 21.

Roselyn Doria led the way as Player of the Game with an all-around line of 14 points built on 5 attacks, 5 blocks, and 4 aces. Janine Marciano also added 14 markers of her own, while Rachelle Anne Daquis and Julia Ipac chipped in 8 points apiece.

After a convincing start that saw them take a 2-0 set lead, the HD Spikers then faced the ire of a reinvigorated Sta. Lucia squad which used a massive 15-1 run to turn a 9-9 tie in the third set to a 24-10 runaway.

Despite that nightmarish setback, the Spikers remained composed, and bounced back to take an 18-10 lead in the fourth set off a 7-2 attack, capped by a Doria block.

Although the Lady Realtors clawed their way back within 3 points, 18-21, off an 8-3 response, it was too little, too late as errors piled up in favor of Cignal, which gladly finished Sta. Lucia off for good.

Nakaka-proud na ang bilis ng adjustment,” said Cignal head coach Shaq delos Santos. “Imagine, one game wala kaming laro and then may laro na ulit.”

Good thing kahit papaano, lumalabas preparation namin. Hopefully, mas mag-improve pa kasi talagang nasa process kami ng transition ng team. Sipag lang din.”

(I’m proud of our quick adjustment. Imagine, we didn't play well last game, and now, our groove is back. Good thing our preparations were being reflected somewhat. Hopefully, we continue to improve because we’re really in the process of transition. We just have to work hard.)

MJ Phillips paced the Lady Realtors with 20 points, while Aiza Maizo-Pontillas added 15 markers in the loss.

Cignal will have a day off as it prepares for a Friday, July 23, 6 pm match against powerhouse squad Petro Gazz Angels. Sta. Lucia, meanwhile, will also return on Friday as it tries to bounce back in a 3 pm match against the Choco Mucho Flying Titans. – Rappler.com
