Jude Garcia and Krung Arbasto kept the Philippines’ campaign alive in the 2021 Asian Senior Beach Volleyball Championships as the country’s other bets bow out on Thursday, November 25 in Phuket, Thailand.
Garcia and Arbasto turned back Qatar 2’s Ahmed Mahmoud and Saifeddin Elmajid, 22-20, 18-21, 15-12, in the men’s Round of 16 to secure a quarterfinal berth for the Philippines.
Earlier, the Garcia-Arbasto tandem outlasted Singapore’s Kingsley Tay and Melvin Goh Teng Kuan, 26-24, 21-16, to advance to the knockout round.
The duo wound up as the last Philippine team standing after the women’s team – composed of the Sisi Rondina-Bernadeth Pons and Dij Rodriguez and Gen Eslapor pairs – exited in the Round of 16.
The other men’s pair of AJ Pareja and James Pecaña, meanwhile, failed to reach the knockout stage after losing their pool match against National Olympic Committee of Thailand (NOCT) 2’s Kangkon Narongdet and Kaewsai Dunwinit, 21-9, 21-19.
Rondina and Pons bowed to Japan’s Akiko Hasegawa and Yurika Sakaguchi, 21-17, 21-15, while Rodriguez and Eslapor yielded to Australia’s Jasmine Fleming and Stefanie Fejes, 21-18, 21-14.
Garcia and Arbasto hope to keep the Philippines’ title hopes alive as they target a Final Four seat against Iran’s Bahman Salemi Injehboroun and Abolhassan Khakizadeh on Friday, November 26. – Rappler.com
