Shakey's Super League preseason MVP Alyssa Solomon leads the mighty NU Lady Bulldogs to a hard-earned gold-medal match sweep of the La Salle Lady Spikers

MANILA, Philippines – National University capped off an unblemished season with the hoisting of the 2022 Shakey’s Super League Pre-Season crown after sweeping De La Salle University in the title game, 25-23, 25-20, 25-20, on Saturday, November 19, at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Tournament MVP Alyssa Solomon fired a team-high 14 points built on 10 attacks, 3 service aces, and a block, helping the Lady Bulldogs claim another title at the expense of the Lady Spikers this year.

NU’s undefeated run continues, stretching its winning ways to 24 straight contests starting from UAAP Season 84. The Lady Bulldogs went 8-0 in this tournament.

Late in the third set, the Lady Bulldogs emerged from a 15-17 deficit by uncorking a 5-0 run and took a commanding 20-17 lead. Solomon’s attack ended the match to secure the diadem for her team.

“[The win] was worth it because it bore a title, especially our sacrifices heading to the Finals. We want to be consistent because that’s what we want to get from every tournament: improvement,” NU head coach Karl Dimaculangan said after the game.

“I reminded my players to play our game and our tempo, and let La Salle play theirs,” he added.

They also overcame a slow start in the first set and went on a scoring rampage in the second frame, where they led by as much as 11, 16-5, before La Salle attempted to mount a failed comeback.

Best Outside Spiker Angel Canino scored 14 points for the runners-up.

UAAP MVP Bella Belen was awarded the 2nd Best Outside Spiker award, while La Salle’s Thea Gagate and NU’s Sheena Toring were awarded the Best and 2nd Best Middle Blocker honors. Meanwhile, Solomon also took home the Best Opposite award.

On the other hand, Adamson wrested away third place from the UST in a five-set thriller, 25-27, 25-20, 16-25, 25-22, 15-11.

Trisha Tubu and Antonette Adolfo put in the finishing touches for the Lady Falcons, which overcame a 1-2 match deficit against the Golden Tigresses.

With the fifth set tied at 11, the victors pounced on UST’s center-line fault to swing momentum in their favor.

Tubu drilled a cross-court hit, which opened the opportunity for Adolfo to score back-to-back kills, including the winning point.

Tubu put up 18 points built on 15 attacks and 2 service aces as Adamson exacted revenge over their opening day loss last September 25.

Rookie Pierre Abellana launched 23 attack points for UST, while Regina Jurado and Imee Hernandez added 18 and 16, respectively.

“That five-setter was exhausting. I told my teammates to address our lapses so that we wouldn’t have a tough time [against UST],” the tournament’s best setter Louie Romero said after the game.

Bernadette Pepito of UST brought home the Best Libero honors.

Meanwhile, Ateneo took hold of fifth place after emerging victorious against UP, 25-17, 25-27, 25-20, 25-12.

Lyann de Guzman and Vanie Gandler scored 14 each for the Blue Eagles, while Jewel Encarnacion led the Fighting Maroons in scoring with 15 markers.

In the other classification round matchup, FEU was victorious against Perpetual Help, 25-18, 25-10, 25-27, 25-17.

Chenie Tagaon’s 16 points were of tremendous help to the Lady Tamaraws in helping them finish out their season strong. – Rappler.com
