The Philippines’ top beach volleyball pair of Sisi Rondina and Bernadeth Pons capped off the three-day national team tryouts staged at the Subic sand courts on Friday, April 30.

Joining Rondina and Pons were their 2019 Southeast Asian Games teammates Dzi Gervacio and Dij Rodriguez, who helped power the country to a beach volleyball bronze.

“I’m very happy because we are all together again, and at the same time, it’s fun to be part of the tryouts,” said Rondina, who helped end the country’s 14-year SEA Games volleyball medal drought.

National team veteran Jovelyn Gonzaga also showed up as she is set to pursue beach volleyball full-time after completing a 90-day retooling course with the Philippine Army.

Other women’s beach volleyball team hopefuls include Alexa Polidario, Erjane Magdato, Babylove Barbon, Princess Robles, Honey Grace Cabansay, Jennifer Cosas, Tin Tiamzon, Javen Sabas, Gen Eslapor, and Mer Jauculan. 

Bannering the tryouts for the girls team were Roma Mae Doromal, Grydelle Joanice Matibag, Khylem Harl Progella, and Samantha Maranan.

The 2019 SEA Games bronze medal team composed of Jude Garcia, Jaron Requinton, and James Buytrago, meanwhile, are set to defend their slots in the national squad in a bid to land another podium finish in men’s beach volleyball.

Completing the seniors aspirants were Anthony Arbasto, Edwin Tolentino, Ranran Abdilla, Ronald Umang-it, Joven Camaganakan, AJ Pareja, Jade Becaldo, Calvin Sarte, James Pecaña, Jason Uy, Philip Bagalay, and Joshua Miña.

Pol Salvador, Rancel Varga, Dominique Gabito, Efraem Dimaculangan, Jay Rack Dela Noche, and Alexander Iraya also vied for slots for the boys team.

A total of 89 players attended the tryouts for both the indoor and beach volleyball teams that started on Wednesday, April 28.

The tryouts were held to form the 2021 SEA Games teams that will represent the Philippines in Hanoi, Vietnam from November 21 to December 2.
