SuperLiga: Generika-Army wins third straight, Cignal winless no more

MANILA, Philippines – The Generika-Army Lady Troopers extended their winning streak to three games, while the Cignal HD Spikers finally got in the winning column of the 2014 Philippine SuperLiga All-Filipino Conference on Thursday, June 19, at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.

Bautista leads the way as Army beats RC Cola

The Generika Army Lady Troopers took down the RC Cola-AirForce Raiders behind 16 points from Nene Bautista and 14 from Jovelyn Gonzaga, 25-21, 27-29, 25-20, 25-21, in a four-set encounter to kick off the gameday’s festivities.

It was the third straight victory for the two-time defending champions, which started their conference on a low note by dropping two straight matches. Moreover, the win improved Army’s record to 3-2, good for third best in the PSL.

AirAsia, also 3-2, doesn’t own the tiebreaker against the Lady Troopers.

RC Cola-AirForce finished its elimination round campaign losing two of their last three games, going 4-2. Right now, they are in second place behind the unbeaten Petron Blaze Spikers, 3-0, but would fall to third if the Lady Troopers win the last game on their schedule.

The Raiders also own a tiebreaker over AirAsia.

Rachel Ann Daquis, who totaled 12 for the contest, put the final touch on her club’s first set victory with a powerful cross-court spike.

The second set was a closer match, with both teams needing extended time to declare a victor. With the contest tied at 22-22, both teams proceeded to exchange scores until a Generika error and Maika Ortiz score iced the canto.

Veteran Joy Cases and rookie sensation Iari Yongco paced the losing side with 16 markers each, while Judy Ann Caballejo contributed 12.

RC Cola rode their momentum heading into the third set, unfurling an early fury of scores to create a six-point threshold, 8-2. However, it would be all Generika-Army from there on out, as the Rico De Guzman-coached team turned up the pressure on defense en route to a 25-20 win.

In the final quarter, a late-set rally by Army knotted the match at 21-apiece. After which, a quick 4-0 run by the defending champs put a stop to the ball game.

Generika-Army will take on Petron on June 22, Sunday, also at the Cuneta Astrodome in their final match.

Tubino’s hot-scoring day guides HD Spikers past Power Attackers

The Cignal HD Spikers finally got a victory in the PSL All-Filipino Conference on Wednesday, beating the PLDT Home TVolution in a four-set match, 25-20, 25-23, 18-25, 25-17.

Three players scored in double-figures for the girls in red, led by Honey Royse Tubino, who had a game-high 26 points.

Abigail Praca and Danika Gendrauli, meanwhile, pitched in as well with 13 and 10, respectively.

It was the first win of the season for the team that made it to the finals in each of the two conferences in the 2013 PSL year, now improving to 1-4. PLDT, on the other hand, drops to 2-4 after losing its third straight match.

A run spearheaded by Tubino had Cignal emerge with an 18-13 edge midway through the first set. Though the Power Attackers managed a respectable response, Cignal had enough leeway to close out and attain an early 1-0 lead.

The script seemed to take a similar route in the second set, but a PLDT rally led by the heroics of Lou Ann Latigay did not permit its opponents to run away the win. Nonetheless, the HD Spikers leaned on Tubino again, as the former UPHSD product converted two late kills to give her side a 25-23 win.

Latigay had 17 points for PLDT, which was led by Sasa Devanadera and her 18 markers.

The Power Attackers had control for most of the third period and used their rhythm to not get swept. However, things would quickly alter in the final canto, as Cignal came out guns ablaze, going up 8-2, and never looked back. - Rappler.com
