Former New Zealand beauty queen competes in Xterra Albay

MANILA, Philippines – Former beauty queen Kristy Jennings of New Zealand joined the off-road triathlon Xterra Albay for the first time, under the professional category.

Crowned as a beauty queen in 1999, she is now set to compete against professional and world title holders from 11 other countries, such as Australia, Canada, Japan, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

Four women will face off with male competitors in a rigorous route under the shadow of the iconic Mount Mayon on Sunday, June 17.

Excitement from athletes

Jennings said she's excited to compete in Albay for the first time, given the tough terrain and challenging competitors.

She will be racing against 3-peat seeking Bradley Weiss of South Africa, the reigning Xterra World Champion.

Weiss, who competed in Xterra Albay in 2015, said he returned to Albay not only for the competition, but also for the warmth and hospitality of the Albayanos.

"I've been to every continent of the world but racing under the shadow of Mayon is perfect. The people are friendly and happy," he said.

This is the third time that the off-road triathlon or Xterra Albay will be done in this city. The first Xterra Albay was in 2015 and the second was in 2016.

Mayor Noel Rosal said that Xterra Albay is a prelude to bigger events
in the province, specifically Legazpi City, as it aims to be known for sports tourism.

"Xterra Albay is once again back to Legazpi, and this is the prelude to bigger events as one of the most attractive off-road competitions. We're preparing also for Iron Man," Rosal said. – Rappler.com
