MANILA, Philippines – Samsung has unwrapped a new variant of the Samsung Galaxy S4 following the reveal of the Galaxy S4 Active and the Galaxy S4 mini. Combining aspects of the smartphone and digital cameras, the Galaxy S4 zoom wants to give smartphone users the ability to take digicam quality photos.
The Galaxy S4 zoom’s main draw will likely be its 16 megapixel rear camera, equipped with 10x optical zoom, enhanced viewing modes, and built-in optical image stabilization (OIS). The smartphone also includes a 1.9 megapixel front facing camera.
Turn the device around and you’ll get a typical Samsung Galaxy smartphone. It’s 4.3″ form factor is equivalent to that of the S4 mini. The phone is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM and runs on Android 4.2 Jelllybean.
An additional feature that blends the camera and phone functionalities is the Zoom Ring, which enables access to certain Galaxy S4 zoom features. Using the Zoom Ring while in a call, for example, can enable in-call photo sharing, allowing users to take photos and send them to the person you’re talking to via MMS. The Zoom Ring can also be used to access multiple camera modes quickly.
Phone functionality is akin to the Galaxy S4, with TouchWiz personalization, cloud and device syncing, and Samsung Hub entertainment functions.
While no price and availability information has been announced, more information is expected to be revealed at Samsung’s Premiere event on June 20.
