Speaking to a packed hall at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, Apple executives led by their CEO Tim Cook unveiled new iPads, MacBook Pros, and new iWork & iLife suites and announced release dates for its new Mac Pro, and new desktop operating system Mavericks.

Apple’s notebook computer line received the latest Intel processors. 

The 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display is slimmer and lighter than the previous version, a 0.71 inch-thin machine that weighs 3.46 pounds.

It comes in 3 configurations a 2.4GHz dual-core i5 base model with 4GB RAM, and a 128GB SSD ($1,299), a mid-range 2.4GHz dual-core i5 model with 8GB RAM, and a 256GB SSD ($1,499) and the top-of-the-line 2.6GHz dual-core i5 model with 8GB RAM and a 512GB SSD ($1,799).

The new Haswell chip dramatically improves battery life. Apple says the laptop will last 9 hours on a single charge.

The 15-inch version of the Retina MacBook Pro takes advantage of Intel’s Crystalwell quad-core i7 processor with Iris Pro Graphics. This laptop comes in two configurations, 2.0GHz quad-core Intel core i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD ($1,999) and 2.3GHz quad-core Intel core i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD ($2,599). Users wanting a bit more graphics power can get the latter which comes with a dedicated GeForce GT 750M graphics card.

Apple notes a respectable 8-hour battery life for the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro.

Both models are available today, October 22 in the United States.

Apple is calling it their “most radical Mac ever.”

The new Mac Pro sports a next-generation Intel Xeon E5 processor with 4, 6, 8, or 12-core versions, 12GB of the fastest RAM available, a pair of AMD FirePro graphical processors and a setup that allows it to use 70% less energy than the previous Mac Pro iteration. The quad-core model starts at US$2,999 while the 6-core model starts at $3,999.

New iPads

Apple also released a new lineup of iPads, renaming the updated iPad to the iPad Air and bringing the Retina display to the iPad mini.

Apple’s new desktop operating system, OS X 10.9 Mavericks is available today, October 22.

For the first time ever, Apple is giving away its operating system for free.

Users of Macs running OS X Snow Leopard and higher can download a free copy of Mavericks from the Mac App store.

The new OS comes with over 200 new features including iBooks and Maps for Mac, a new version of the Safari web browser, enhanced multi-display support and Finder Tabs. 

Next-gen iWork & iLife

Apple’s productivity suite iWork and creative suite iLife also get a major update. Both suites have been redesigned to work better with Mavericks and iOS 7. Existing users get free updates, the suites also come free with every new Mac or new iOS device running iOS 7. –
