Sony Smartband fitness tracker hands-on review

We demo one of our favorite fitness trackers the SmartBand from Sony

LAS VEGAS, USA – They’ve been around for a year or two now, but wearables computers are starting to gain momentum. At the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas more tech companies are jumping into the fray. We’ve seen wearables from Garmin, ZTE, and LG. Kickstarter project Pebble also launched Pebble Steel.

My favorite so far is the Smartband from Sony.

I’ve been using the Jawbone UP24 wristband – which feels is comfortable but at times can feel like a stiff, rubber bracelet. Because of that I find myself taking it off when I have to work on my computer. I also worry about getting it wet when I wash my hands.

In contrast Sony’s Smartband is soft and lightweight, very comfortable when I tried it on. It is also waterproof so I don’t have to worry about it when I wash my hands, or I can just leave it on when I take a shower.

The Smartband is really just a rubber strap. Inside lies the “core”, a waterproof device that logs physical activity and sleep. The core is removable, and one day Sony says it will provide other wearing options like as a pendant or a tie clip.

The band works in conjunction with the Lifelog app, which will work on all Android smartphones running Jellybean and up. The app is clean and visually appealing. It allows you to scroll back and forward through moments in time like when you last went running, or your sleep from two days ago.

Sony wants to set itself apart from other fitness trackers stressing the entertainment aspect of the Smartband. When you double tap a button, located on the side of the device it creates a bookmark for that moment. It’ll know what song was playing on your smartphone at that particular moment in your run or log the calls that came in at a specific moment in time.

No word on pricing but Sony says the device will be available in Spring of 2014.
