Twitter gets new look: what’s different?

Twitter updates its web user interface to bring it current with its iOS and Android apps, but changes are purely aesthetic

MANILA, Philippines – Don’t be shocked if everything looks different when you log in to Twitter this week. The popular social network and microblogging system is slowly rolling out a new look for its website user interface.

While changes are purely aesthetic, the redesign takes queues from Twitter’s iOS and Android apps. Twitter announced the changes via a tweet earlier this week, but only a handful of users are seeing the update.

Most noticeable is the nav bar which is now white instead of black. Ordering of menu items remains the same (Home, Connect, Discover, Me, Search, Direct Messages, Settings and Compose) but the icons have been updated to match those on the Twitter smartphone app.

In keeping with 2013’s design trend, everything is flat and clean. Fonts are larger but thinner, buttons no longer feel 3-dimensional.

The left sidebar also looks different. A mini-version of your profile page (header photo, avatar, and username) now appear on the top of the sidebar above the compose new tweet box.

Twitter is also promising the ability to personalize your profile with accent colors under a new Web Design setting but we’re not seeing that feature yet.
