LG G2 gets it’s own ‘mini-me’

MANILA, Philippines — The 2014 Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain is LG’s stage as they raise the curtains on their first ever “compact” smartphone. 

The 4.7-inch G2 mini is the smaller sibling of LG’s 5.2-inch flagship smartphone the G2.

According to LG President and CEO Dr. Jong-seok Park, “The G2 mini is all about bringing the best user experience of the G2 to a more compact, mid-tier device, giving millions of customers the opportunity to benefit from the LG premium experience.”

Unlike Sony’s Xperia Z1 Compact and more in the footsteps of Samsung and HTC which have also released scaled back “mini” versions of their flagship phones, LG has throttled back some of the hardware specs of the G2 mini. A 1.2Ghz or 1.7Ghz quad-core Qualcomm processor instead of the 2.26Ghz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, 8GB instead of 16 or 32GB of storage and just 1GB instead of 2GB of RAM. 

That being said it’s still adequate enough to satisfy its “mid-tier” target audience.

The G2 mini sports the same design as the G2 except for a textured removable back plate that gives the phone a more tactile feel and a better grip. The phone also sports the same rear-only button placement of the G2 and carries over software features like KnockOn which turns the display on/off when tapped twice.

The G2 mini will be available in a confusing array of variants, single or dual SIM; 3G, 4G LTE or LATAM LTE; and in black, white, red and gold (depending on region). 

The 3G Dual Sim version will be available starting March in Europe followed by Asia, Latin America and the Middle East soon after.
