MANILA, Philippines – Sony announced a new device that will work with the PlayStation 4 gaming console: a virtual reality headset.
Shown at the Game Developer’s Conference (GDC) in San Francisco on March 18 (March 19 Philippine time), the headset is currently called Project Morpheus.
An introductory blog post by Shuhei Yoshida, PlayStation president of Worldwide Studios, on the PlayStation blog, revealed that Project Morpheus – in its current state at GDC – is a prototype of the device.
Project Morpheus offers a head-mounted display with 1080p resolution, as well as a 90-degree field of view.
A description of Project Morpheus says its sensors are meant to simulate movement in the virtual environment: “Accelerometer and gyroscope sensors built into the head mounted unit as well as PlayStation Camera accurately tracks head orientation and movement, so as your head rotates, the image of the virtual world rotates intuitively in real-time.”
Project Morpheus also intends to provide a solid experience in other aspects, as 3D audio technology creates stereoscopic sound that changes in real-time based on the helmet’s orientation. The system also works with the DualShock 4 wireless controller and PlayStation Move as controls for your gaming experience.
In a separate interview with Yoshida, Gamespot reported that while pricing hasn’t been set in stone, the device isn’t going to hit the US$1,000 mark. A $1,000 price point “doesn’t necessarily indicate the pricing that we’re gonna have,” Yoshida said. – Rappler.com
