Google introduces Android Lollipop
Google also unveils the new family of Nexus devices that will carry the latest OS – the Nexus 6, Nexus 9, and the Nexus Player

MANILA, Philippines – Google has finally revealed the name of its latest mobile operating system (OS) – previously referred to only as Android L since it was first teased at Google I/O in June 2014. The new OS will be known as Android Lollipop.

Android Lollipop is Google’s boldest attempt yet. With its approach called Material Design, the OS is designed to seamlessly work with different kind of devices – from smartphones to tablets, and TVs.

In the official announcement posted on its blog Wednesday, October 15 (Thursday, October 16 in the Philippines), Google noted that “with Lollipop, it’s easier than ever to pick up where you left off, so the songs, photos, apps, and even recent searches from one of your Android devices can be immediately enjoyed across all the other ones.”

Google added that Lollipop’s theme is bringing everyone together.

As an open platform, Android has previously earned criticism about how segmented it has become over the years. Google hopes to address that with Lollipop and its Android One initiative which hopes to make smartphones available for billions of users worldwide.

New Nexus devices

The announcement also covered which devices Lollipop will be initially available in, confirming the rumors of the Motorola-made Nexus 6 smartphone and the HTC-made Nexus 9, and the first device that runs Android TV – the ASUS-made Nexus player.

As rumored, the Nexus 6 will have a 6-inch Quad HD display with a 13 megapixel camera. A welcome touch to the phone’s design, the Nexus six featurs dual front-facing stereo speakers perfect for viewing videos and playing games.

Google says the phone also comes with a Turbo Charger that lets you “get up to six hours of use with only 15 minutes of charge.”

Next is Google’s answer to the iPad Air – the Nexus 9. It’s an 8.9-inch tablet that’s “small enough to easily carry around in one hand, yet big enough to work on.”

The Nexus 9 may be paired with a keyboard (sold separately) that magnetically attaches to the tablet – a nod to users’ desire for more productivity on a tablet.

Last but not the least is the Nexus player – “a streaming media player for movies, music and videos.” More than that though, the Nexus player is the very first Android gaming device. When paired with a gamepad, the Nexus player lets a user play Android games on his/her TV.

Availability

The Nexus 6 will be available for pre-order late October and in stores come November. The Nexus 9 and Nexus player will be available for pre-order on October 17 and will be in stores beginning November 3. More availability details are on google.com/nexus.

The devices above are not the only ones that will have Android Lollipop. The Nexus 5, 7, 10 and Google Play edition devices should have the latest OS too in the coming weeks. – Rappler.com
